Last Night’s NYC Digital Media Meetup -- So Frigid, It Was Hot!

Last night in NYC, my company, Manatt Digital Media, hosted our 4th NYC Digital Media Meetup -- this time in the Treehouse Bar of the James Hotel in Soho.  Absolutely frigid temps -- below 0 wind-chills -- insane (even for this Minnesota boy).  Nonetheless, more digital media souls showed than budgeted (significantly more, which pleased us!) -- clearly passionate about our craft -- braved the icy cold to drink-in the warmth of hipster cocktails and mingle with one another.  Which is what this is all about.  (Soho was even good enough to welcome us with open arms with this Meetup billboard, in a scene that just screams “COLD!”).

Nearly 40 (we had planned for 25) digital media entrepreneurs attended this one -- startup founders/CEOs (companies to watch like Rukkus, Qello, Fanlime, Mixify), VCs/bankers to finance them (GCA Savian, Marcum Cronus Partners, Originate, JMP Securities), media company execs to partner with them (Comcast, Superfly, Google), indie filmmakers to fuel them with content (The Documentary Group, Branded Pictures Entertainment), major talent agents to represent them (UTA), and reporters (CNET, Mashable) to report on all of it.

Another great event.

Our goal with these meetups is to select different players in the overall media and technology eco-system -- all of whom must be passionate and add something unique to the mix.  Introduce them to each other.  And then, watch the magic happen as they connect ...

That’s what I love doing ... and, oh yes, reporting on it myself ....

5 Questions with Mixify’s CEO David Moricca -- My Exclusive Q&A

Mixify is a NYC-based digital media start-up at the heart of the already-massive (and seemingly unstoppable) electronic dance music (EDM) scene.  The company has its own portal for sharing EDM playlists -- but has really hit its stride with live remote, but full-scale, DJ sets.  Imagine attending a major university off the beaten track (like Des Moines) (by the way, I can get away with that reference because I myself am from the frozen tundra of the Midwest).  And, imagine your wanting to experience a live set by your favorite DJ.  Well, that ain’t gonna happen in Des Moines and countless other markets ... until now.  Now, your DJ can stream live from anywhere directly to a club in your remote city -- and can fully customize his/her set for you and the club.  Even more, your DJ and you can interact directly during the set.  Mixify, in other words, brings the virtual and physical worlds together to enable entirely new experiences.  That is powerful.

I have been watching this company for several months, and believe they are onto something.  For this reason, I asked Founder & CEO David Moricca to tell us more in this, my latest, post in my continuing “5 Questions With ...” series.  David is smart, passionate, and believes -- as do I -- in the immense power of music.

Now, onto the questions!

(1) What is the reason your company exists (and what problem(s) are you looking to solve)?

Mixify.com (live streaming site) exists as a platform to enable EDM DJs to engage their fans online and grow their social following.

Mixify Clubcast (2-way live streaming into venues) exists to provide venues and promoters in secondary US and international markets a way to bring big-name DJs into their events in an immersive and personalized way, but at a fraction of the cost.

(2) How are you different from your competitors?

With Mixify.com, we differentiate ourselves primarily through the level of interaction and access the experience provides. With a mixify.com live stream, the artist and fan have a truly shared, participatory experience as opposed to a one way consumption experience.

With Mixify Clubcast, we are redefining live streaming to be not only about streaming out from big events, but streaming desirable artists into smaller markets and events. The differentiation comes through our technology, industry relationships and the fact that we are creating a new market with promoters and venues.

(3) Why will you succeed (and what is your single most important ingredient for success)?

We believe we will succeed because we know how to execute well in a market full of challenges, and because we have created a revenue model that is purely additive to every part of the value chain (artists, manager, agents, promoters, venues and fans).

(4) What makes you unique (and what do you enjoy most outside of building your business)?

Outside of building Mixify, I am enjoying being a Dad of 2 young boys – a 4-year old and a 1-year old. It does not get better that for me.

(5) What digital media trend is most interesting to you (and what is the least)?

Clearly, given the market I am in, I am most interested and excited by how live streaming can change the way fans experience different types of content (music, comedy, sports) and in different settings (homes, movie theaters, clubs). We are only at the tip of the iceberg here.

The NYC Digital Media Startup Scene (& 2 Companies to Watch)

Am flying back from NYC to SoCal as we speak, after spending the past 4 days there in meetings and events.  All related to digital media.  This trip, once again, reinforces how vibrant the NYC entrepreneurial community is (no surprises there) and how important to such vibrancy is a sense of real entrepreneurial community and collective action/motivation.

Two data points that drove this point home.

First, I visited our good partner WeWork’s newest NYC home downtown near the World Trade Center memorial.  It just opened one month ago, and it already is packed to the gills (this picture below to the left captures the scene).  The energy and creativity are palpable.  It is impossible for any real human being to not be inspired by the collective passion reflected in that sea of Macbooks and farmers’ tables (and as the smooth wafts of lattes filled the air).

Second, my partner and Chairman of the Manatt Digital Media group, Hale Boggs, and I hosted our 3rd Digital Media Meetup in the Biergarten of The Standard Hotel in the meatpacking district this past Tuesday night (the picture to the right shows the two of us and Hale’s son, Andrew, who is on the left).  Each one of these meetups gets bigger.  Each one lasts longer.  And an increasing amount of suds are poured (together with the brats necessary to be washed down).  Once again, the overall “stew” was quite electric -- a melange of entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, writers, philanthropists, filmmakers, agents.   I heard from several after that real meaningful connections were made.  And, that’s what it’s all about, apart from also simply being a call-to-action to celebrate our shared passion for innovating in the media and technology space.  These are the innovators.  This rubbing of shoulders is an important way that “it" gets done.  This kind of thought exchange are the bread crumbs that lead to the promised land of ingenuity and, ultimately, to solutions.  It’s also simply cool to do it in the Biergarten of The Standard Hotel on a gorgeous September night!

On this trip, I also visited with several digital media startups.  Two of my favorites that I have tracked for quite some time are in one of my favorite areas of focus -- music.  First, Mixify.  Great pedigree of music investors/advisors.  Passionate and talented CEO, David Moricca.  Disruptive vision (in the most positive ways) for the EDM world -- combining virtual/online events in an otherwise venue-only based world (a theme about which I have frequently written).  Second, Rukkus.  Again, passion exudes from the pores of the founding fathers Joe Messineo and Manick Bhan.  Their aim is to have a better -- transformative -- ticketing platform for live events.  Essentially, to beat StubHub and others at their own game (both from a user experience perspective and via Rukkus's proprietary ticketing algorithms that take ticket feeds from all sites and optimize your seating based on the price you want to pay).  The service also is a live music recommendation engine -- you pick the city, they’ll show you all the shows (big or small).  Intriguing.

Check them both out.
